Since I rent I have to work around a few things I wouldn't own, like vertical blinds. So in my Amish/ Family room I decided to make a cornice because to add a valance a curtain rod would need to stick far out from the wall to clear the blinds. I decided to make my own, here's how I did it: I purchased pre-cut Styrofoam from Home Depot and with some hot glue and blue painters tape I made a very long and lightweight form that I covered with some homespun fabric. I attached it to the wall by gluing loops on the back of the form and used cup hooks on the wall. Easy and super inexpensive. I think the foam was $2-3.

Michelle great idea, exactly what I was looking for. I too rent and have the long vertical blinds going out onto our screen room. I have two sets of sliding glass doors and really wanted to put something over them with out installing any permanant fixture. At my old house, we built shelves out of wood to go over the doors/windows but I obviously can't do that here. I never thought of using those styrofoam sheets - thanks so much!!

What a great idea. I was just sitting in our sunroom today thinking I wanted to spruce it up somehow without spending too much money. This is perfect. Now all I have to do is find time to do it :)
